Wealth Management for Complex Balance Sheets
Afton Financial is a partner-led firm serving business owners, executives, and families nationwide. Investment decisions are made in the context of everything else you own.
Portfolios Built In-House
We construct and manage custom stock and ETF portfolios ourselves, from aggressive growth to conservative mandates. Portfolio construction and ongoing management are overseen directly by the firm’s partners.
Planning Ahead of a Liquidity Event
The sale of a business, a property, or a concentrated position is often a family’s largest financial event. The planning that matters most happens before the transaction closes.
Your Finances, Coordinated
Families with significant assets rarely lack advisors. They lack coordination. Afton Financial manages investments in the context of the full balance sheet, working alongside your CPA and estate attorney so that allocation, tax, and estate decisions point in the same direction.
Disciplined Capital Allocation
We construct and manage custom stock and ETF portfolios in-house, from aggressive growth to conservative mandates. Each allocation is sized against the family’s liquidity needs, time horizon, and existing exposures, with ongoing risk assessment as markets and circumstances change.
Direct Access to the Partners
Clients work directly with the firm’s partners. The people who build your strategy are the same people who review the portfolio and sit in the meeting with your attorney. That continuity matters most when decisions are time-sensitive.
Coordination Beyond the Portfolio
Concentrated stock, business succession, liquidity events, and intergenerational wealth transfer all carry investment consequences. We coordinate with your CPA and estate attorney so that investment decisions account for the tax and estate strategies developed with those professionals.
Where Our Work Concentrates
Major financial transitions expose weaknesses that portfolio performance alone cannot reveal. Our work focuses on decisions with significant consequences: how capital is allocated, how proceeds from a sale are deployed, and how income is sustained once earnings stop.
Portfolios are built and managed in-house using individual stocks and ETFs, with mandates ranging from aggressive growth to conservative. Allocation decisions are made against the client’s full balance sheet, not the portfolio in isolation. Positioning is reviewed regularly as markets and circumstances change.
Planning starts with the balance sheet. Assets, liabilities, business interests, real estate, and the cash flow connecting them. From there, we model the decisions ahead and evaluate the tradeoffs of each. The plan is revisited as circumstances change, not filed away.
The sale of a business or investment property is often one of the largest financial events a family will experience. We work with clients before the transaction to evaluate how proceeds may be allocated, what liquidity is needed, and how the resulting position fits the broader balance sheet. Coordination with the client’s CPA and attorney starts early, while there is still room to plan.
Moving from accumulating assets to drawing on them changes how a portfolio needs to be managed. We develop income strategies around spending requirements, withdrawal sequencing across account types, and the risk of drawing down assets during market declines. For business owners, that planning can begin years before retirement or a potential business sale.
Who We Work With
Our clients include business owners, corporate executives, physicians, real estate investors, and families managing multigenerational wealth. Many are actively accumulating assets while navigating increasingly complex financial decisions. Others are preparing for business transitions, retirement, or the transfer of wealth to the next generation.

How an Engagement Works
Every engagement starts in the same place, whether the occasion is a pending business sale or a portfolio review: the balance sheet. Recommendations follow from there.
Conversation
& Discovery
An introductory conversation to understand your balance sheet, your obligations, and the decisions ahead. We also ask who else advises you, including your CPA and estate attorney, so coordination starts from the first meeting.
Balance Sheet Analysis
We review your assets, liabilities, business interests, and cash flow to map your total balance sheet exposure. From there, we model the decisions ahead and identify where risk is concentrated.
Proposal
Review
We present the proposed financial plan and investment recommendations, explaining the rationale, risks, and tradeoffs. Clients have an opportunity to discuss the strategy and ask questions before implementation.
Implement
& Maintain
We open accounts, transfer assets, and build your portfolio in-house. The plan and portfolio are reviewed regularly, with adjustments made as markets and your circumstances change.

Start With a Conversation
An introductory conversation covers your balance sheet, the decisions ahead, and whether Afton is the right fit. For many clients, that starts before a business sale or other liquidity event. If the fit is there, we will outline how an engagement would work.
